Hi,

I have built my fair share of gaming PCs, however, my little sister has asked me to build her a PC for college. She is going into engineering and will be using AutoCAD. I know that this takes quite a bit more graphics processing power, but don't know how much since I have never personally used AutoCAD. She said she will be doing both 2D and 3D rendering.

So my question is: do I need to spend a fortune on a Nvidia Quadro GPU, or can I save a ton of money and use something like a GTX 970 4GB?

I always said you cannot mix both. other 3d programs like 3ds MAX and video editing software can get away with a gaming card just fine. but AutoCAD very much needs workstation card. it's like night and day for comparison. therefor you will suffer in gaming, but work is more important, you paying thousands per semester to learn.

I suggest do another build for gaming or get a gaming laptop. But than again she might never do major AutoCAD at school and a gaming card is be fine. It will however struggle or not even run larger scenes when it comes to like car engines and major stuff that has 1000s of parts.

For a good better example. the highest level geforce card (say 980 Ti) is not faster than a the entry level Quadro K2200 which is...

Either you can have AutoCAD run great or run games great. either or, but not both unless you are willing to spend $800 and get a Quadro M8000 (GTX 970).
