GTX vs RTX + monitor

Hi guys,

So I've recently built a new PC

Ryzen 5 2600x
Gigabyte X470 auros ultra gaming motherboard
Coolermaster h500p (case)
Coolermaster ml240r RGB CPU cooler
Corsair txm650 PSU
Samsung 970 Evo m.2 ssd
2tb barracuda HDD
ASUS ROG strix 6gb 1060 GPU

My immediate goal is to get 144hz/fps at 1440p so im now looking to upgrade my gpu and monitor but I've run into a problem, until a few days ago I wasn't even aware of the rtx cards having been released so my plan was to just go out and buy a strix 11gb 1080ti but as I was about to do so I noticed that the rtx 2080 was listed for the exact same price as the 1080ti, so now after much reading and many benchmark videos I still don't feel well informed enough to make a decision.

Im mostly playing wow and fortnite at the moment but I will be getting other more demanding games when released like black ops 4.

My second problem is choosing a monitor I had a few requirements with this one,

27+ inches (the thought of "upgrading" to a smaller screen repulses me)
1440p
144+hz
Curved if possible but not required
G-sync to pair with new GPU
$1000 budget (semi-flexible)

With that in mind I began my search but again I've run into a problem, I've found a few monitors that meet these requirements however I'm really not sure which to buy.

So far the front runner is the Asus ROG swift PG27VQ But it is the same size as my current monitor and I would have liked a little bigger the problem with going bigger is I would likely have to give up g-sync to meet the other requirements and I'm not sure if I'm going to need or want g-sync now or in the future, as before I've done alot of research on g-sync but again I still don't feel like I am well informed enough to make a decision.

Any help would be much appreciated because I'm completely lost, thanks.

Both the 1080ti and 2080 can give you 144fps in 1440p, but the ryzen 2600X at 4.2ghz will bottleneck the cards and limit the fps to around 100. Check the ryzen 2600X benchmarks.

But all is not lost! You have 3440x1440 res curved 100hz monitors. Ryzen 2600X and 1080ti/2080 can comfortably give you 100fps for that 100hz screen.

With that in mind, I would recommend you get the 2080 over 1080ti if it's the same price.

Are you sure everything I'm reading says it's unlikely the 2600x would bottleneck either of the cards?

A higher resolution would look better but I'm looking for more gaming performance than graphics quality as I don't do any editing or streaming or anything like that.

Damn, I knew I should have just gotten the 8700k.

Ok so the 144hz/fps is mainly what I was aiming for now so that's basically out of reach? Even with settings optimised for performance and the details turned down?

If I gave up some resolution and got one of those 2550x1080 monitors with g-sync would that work?

yeah i definitely think i want g-sync now, i dont really understand how the resolution affects the fps on the cpu side my 2600x pushes 140-200 fps on fortnite now at 40% load on 1920x1080. so raising the resolution to 1440p will drop fps?

Fortnite is a light game. I am talking about aaa games like shadow of the tomb raider, assassin's creed oddessy etc.

Resolution only impacts gpu. All games have run via a game engine, that's run by both cpu and gpu.
And just like resolution affects gpu, certain settings affect cpu.

If a cpu can run a game engine without any problem, like ur ryzen 2600 runs fortnight on 40% utilization, it's not cpu bound. So ur fps is solely dependent on the gpu. That's why fortnight and cs go see crazy fps like 200-300.

But that's a different with latest AAA titles. They tax the cpu and gpu heavily to give those gorgeous graphics and eye candy. Hence the costly high-end hardware requirements.

ahh thats much clearer thank you i understand so 144hz/fps will be easy in fortnite even at 1440p but more demanding aaa titles wont get the fps to max out the refresh rate and thats why i should still get a g-sync monitor for smoother graphics in those more demanding games.

ok so with that in mind im going to get the 2080 because its the same price as the 1080ti,
could you suggest a good monitor thats 28-32 inches 1440p and 144hz with g-sync?

oh i see i thought the only real difference was the cooler, i would definitely like to overclock it so the msi will be great.
thanks so much for your help and patience you've helped me immensely i really had no idea which ones to get.
