GTX1080 good enough to run games on UW 1440p ?

Hi,

I'm new here.

Would a GTX1080 be sufficient to run heavy games (e.g. Star Citizen, Metro, ..) on an Ultrawide 3440x1440 monitor? I'm thinking of buying a 1080 as the prices are dropping nicely, and a new monitor, but hesitating between normal 1440p and ultrawide.

Or should I wait for the RTX2070?

Cheers,
Tom

I think he's right.

Some new games with the settings maxed out will max out a GTX 1080 on 1080p around 60 fps.

Buy basically it's just preference...you pay for having more pixels with a fps reduction and/or reduced settings unless your not maxing it out and I think 3440x1440 has the potential to just about max any graphics card out at 60 fps.

I like running a GTX 1080 on 1080p because I can max everything out and still get good frame rates with the games I play.

It's a judgement call.

At the moment....I think the 1080 is the best deal going for running games on high settings etc.

....and at the moment.....we don't have a good idea how the RTX2070 is going to perform versus a 1080 (as far as I know).

So if you're willing to wait and see....then wait and see.

I'm in the same boat at the moment.

I want to upgrade a 1060 to a ......????? ......at the moment. ;)

Hi jay32267,
thanks for your reply, but my main question was about the choice of monitor. A good friend of mine believes the 1080 will be on the weak side to drive a 3440x1440 monitor (but he's a hardware whore). Anyone have the experience to compare? Should I go for a 16:9 1440p instead of 21:9 ? I want to play serious games on high settings (ultra not required) at fps between 60-100.
