I was wondering if there would be any point in me buying a gtx260 to replace my 7800gt if I don't upgrade my motherboard to one with PCIe2.0. That said, would I be better with a gtx275 on my existing PCIe1.0 or getting a gtx260 and a new motherboard with 2.0? Any ideas? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Considering the latest cards specifically the GTX 200 series are specially designed to take full advantage of the PCI 2.0 interface there is no gain in investing on the cards without upping ur mobo....i would suggest u to upgrade ur mobo to get the best use from those cards....SInce uve suggested ur mobo has only PCI 1.0 interface then i assume ur rig may bottleneck the card if u were to get one.....

@ Adamsteenfeldt: Do not bother changing motherboards, the loss of performance between PCI-E 1.0 and 2.0 is tiny for the cards you are considering, really, really tiny.
Something that might be more importaint is: Which CPU are you running? The 7800 is quite an old card and if the CPU is of similar age I think it will be far more restrictive than the PCI-E version of your motherboard.
Also bear in mind both of those cards need far more power, so check the PSU has the connectors and output to feed them.

Thanks for the replies.... I am running...

CPU - Intel 2.66 quad
MB - PK5R
RAM - 4G at 1066
GPU - 7800gt
PSU - Not 100% but I think it's over 560W as it's a silverstone zeus.

I have a 1900x1200 24 inch lcd and like to run it at native res on all apps/games.

Did I miss anything? I'm new to this whole forum thing.

Thanks again.

Fair comment but I'm one of those people who get stuck on a brand and never let go. Stupid I know but that's life. I just bought an Asus gtx260 for NZ$310, roughly US$225. I hope I did good....

Thanks for your help everyone!!!

No I just got the basic one, the one with camo and a pic of a girl on it. I couldn't find any others here in NZ. I wanted the TOP (OC) one but it was as much as a gtx275 and I didn't get my monthly bonus at work. From what I read in the specs and on this site there isn't too much difference. Tom puts them in the same tier on the heirarchy list. Either way it's way better than my 7800gt...
