hi guys
ive seen a GTX275 for just £38 and im considering buying it for my spare gaming pc .. however the pc,s power supply is a "OCZ 500w stealthstream psu " and this has 2 x +12v rails with 18A on each rail
now ive checked it using the popular "eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite"( http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp ) and it reports a recommended 386w and a minimum 336w ,and it does state the +12v rails are also a important factor, however 36A is within NVidia,s requirement
my only concern is the wattage .... NVidia recommend a 550w but most of the time these are way above whats really needed ( it just covers their backs by overstating the wattage )
so would my OCZ 500w stealthstream psu be enough to power the GTX275( 896mb) .... I also have a C.I.T 650w psu with 19A and 20A respectively on the +12v rails so how would that be with the GTX275
finally ive also seen a GTX280(1gb) for £50 ... would either of the two psu,s ive mentioned be good enough for the GTX280 ( NVidia also recommend 550w ) ....
note : both the psu,s have just 1 x 6pin pci-e connector,however I could use a adapter with the 6pin(to convert it to 8pin) then 2 x molex to create the 6pin thus giving me the require 1 x 8pin and 1 x 6pin pci-e connectors
theres a few other cards ive seen so I will list these and let me know if any will work with the ocz 500w psu or the cit 650w psu
1) HD4870
2) HD4890
3) GTX260
as ive mentioned I can create the required 6pin/8pin connectors using adapters ... so would any of these be ok
any help will be much appreciated ..
cheers guys

Any of those would work. I've got a 7970 running on a 500W PSU and my gtx 780 runs on 650W. Those are two extremely powerful cards and if they can run on 500W, yours definitely can. Especially since the 780 is the third most powerful card made by nvidia

that's another positive reply .. I got the green light on another forum ... the GTX280 is the card im after ... granted its quite old but it will still run the latest games at reasonable detail levels ......
im amazed your running a beast like the HD7970 with a 500w psu ... do you have any power readings such as the amount of power it draws from the wall (maximum ) ..... and do you think there will be any problems using a 8pin adapter ?

Looks like im drawing about 350W out of the wall. Most of the other devices in that build are very low power so they dont take much.
