So here's the situation.

I have a Gigabyte P55A-UD3 motherboard currently installed, with an i3-530 overclocked to 3.85GHz. There is a GTX460 768Mb card as well as a GT430. Both are plugged into the pci-e x16 slots. I will be receiving shortly both a different model motherboard (AsusTek Maximus III gene), and another GTX460, which I will proceed to sli with my current one.

The tricky part is this, since I have never sli-d before. Can I get a pci-e x4 or pci 2.2 (not really fond of that one) to a pci-e x16 adapter, and keep my GT430 running as dedicated physics in the adapted slot?

Thanks guys.

Do you know if the 430 will work on the extension though, while sli'd? I'm not really asking if I need to use the 430, just asking if using the 430 will work. I'd like to have it that way. I know the 460's will work. Both are first gen, and even though one has higher memory by ~200, it will just be limited. Done lots of reading on that. Thanks for the cautious remark though :)

Well, yes. However, the manufacturers and other users have already confirmed that it will work, as well as nvidia. Therefore, I'm not worried about the sli config. If you are asking why I am doing it this way, I got the 768 MB one for like 50 bucks and the 1 gig one later for 65. it's a cheap way to have spectacularly long lasting gaming performance. Thanks for answering!

If they said it will work then it's fine. The only drawback is both card will be limited to 768mb. Performance will be fast but the lack of vram might prevent you from using setting that eats lots of memory like AA. Anyway happy gaming :)
