GTX580 Engineering Sample

So I bought a barley used GTX 580SOC of ebay for $200(AUD). I thought it was a pretty good price 😀.

Anyway when the PC was booting up I noticed the bios said "Engineering Release - Not for Production Use"

Anyone want anything done to it before I contact them?
Should I contact gigabyte or nvidia?

Cool, it looks like it comes with a higher default voltage, probably because of the higher core clock. It looks like you have the Extreme button on. All the same, looks good. I wouldn't call anyone, I'd just keep the card and game away. The Gigabyte SOC is the finest expression of the Fermi generation.
Cool! How does it perform? I don't know that's necessarily a bad thing, but it's worth it to do some research to see if the engineering samples are special cherry-picked GPU's or if they implemented some improvements before mass production. I would think they have fewer built in limitations than the production versions, but that's just a guess.

So you didn't buy it from an official retailer then?
 


What specs do you wan't exactly systems specs or benchmarks?

Your GPU-Z looks good, except a couple points:
!) Your BIOS ends in "FF", which is apparently the regular retail BIOS according to this page on TPU:

My BIOS string is: 70 .10.17.00.52
2) Your memory clock is 10 MHz higher than the standard SOC shown in the linked review above.

The next thing to do is to check our ASIC quality by righ-clicking on the top bar of GPU-Z go to "Read ASIC Quality...." That will give you an idea of the quality of the chip they used. Anything 80% and above is pretty good, the higher the better.

I would say keep it and enjoy it, play around with overclocking if you want to do some testing to see just how good it is. Make sure you turn on that "Extreme" button!
 
That ASIC is a tad on the low side, but not bad at all. What's your standard 3D/load voltage?

I had a GTX 580 with an ASIC of 78% and a default voltage of 1.05. Then I got another with an ASIC of 82% and the default 3D voltage is 1.0. The BIOS selects a different default voltage depending on the ASIC score.

Hope you don't mind me geeking out on you. I've never heard of anyone with an engineering sample, and then a Gigabyte SOC at that. So I'm just trying to see if there's anything really different about it. I would love to slap one of those babies next to my current card for some wicked SLI.
