Ok, so im going to upgrade my current video card (amd radeon 5770) with either the gtx 660 or the amd radeon 7870. they are pretty close in price but i was wondering which card would be best for me? I have an msi 970a-g45 motherboard, and my monitor only supports up to 1650 x 1050.

Honestly, no matter the game. They are very close to each other. Thus get whatever card is cheaper. This is a toss up.

Unless you only play skyrim and dirt. Which the 7870 is more optimized for.

HD7870. It doesn't matter in today's games, but the crippled compute performance of the Kepler cards is a future butt-bite just waiting to happen.
Also, if you have any interest in Bitcoin mining, AMD is the ONLY way to go (no nVidia card mines for more than the cost of the power needed to run it).

For today's games, you might as well flip a coin between the 7870 and the 660. For overclocking and/or future-resistance to needing upgrades, the 7870 gets my vote. Like jtt283 said, you can also bring bit-coin mining into this for additional reasoning towards the 7870. However, the 660 is still a good card for gaming and it has a good price.
