Hey all,

Quick Story:
How am I getting 4k 60hz on my gtx 770 via HDMI??

Long Story:

I recently upgraded my HTPC from an XFX r7 260x 2gb to an EVGA Gtx 770 2gb. I have my HTPC hooked up to a 60' 4k Samsung TV. While using the 260x I had a displayport to HDMI 2.0 adapter to run everything at 4k 60hz and it worked flawlessly.

Once I swapped to the 770 the displayport to HDMI 2.0 seized to work and would just flash grey and blue lines. Did some reading and apparently my TV is picky with adapter for 4k.

Here's where it gets weird. I just plugged in my HDMI 2.0 cable to my tv and it works fine at 4k 60hz according to Nvidia Control Panel, My TV source setting and the Windows Resolution Set. Ive played Rocket League, Borderlands 2 and Slime Rancher in 4k as - all games fluctuate between 30-60 fps via MSI Afterburner.

The only program that says its not in 4k is Speccy - which states its 1920x1080.

I've read that Nvidia has drivers that offered 4k 60hz through HDMI. Ive also read that since my cable is under 7ft it will work at 4k 60 but the HDMI port on the 770 is a 1.4 If im not mistaken. So im confused.

System Specs:
i5 2400
EVGA Gtx 770 2gb
PNY 128gb SSD
Corsair H60
Gigabyte H61n (mini itx rev 2.0)
InWin 901 Chasis
Kingston HyperX Fury 4gb
Windows 10 64bit
Geforce Drivers: 382.33 (5/21/2017 release date)

Yeah like I've said I've heard of drivers being released for them, cable length or even turning on UHD color scaling (which allows for less color information and therefore 4k 60 is achievable) but still its odd.

My main rig I use a samsung 4k monitor and I would say I'm at least decent at identifying the difference between HD and UHD resolutions and it definitely looks like 4k.

Well, in that case, I don't know. but it sure is exciting, because I have a MSI 770 windforce in my main rig. 4k here I come, lol

Yeah man try it out and let me know what you come up with. I'm using a solid HDMI 2.0 cable too if case you have one lying around.

I’m trying to figure this out as well any solid answers would be appreciated. I just got a LG 4K on Black Friday and while I was trying to figure out how to connect my pc for 4K I came across nvidia resolution support website that states 4K 60hz is only achievable out the DisplayPort but my tv doesn’t have one so I just tried hdmi. But I’m pretty sure I’m still getting 60hz because I can play games at 60fps and I instantly notice if the frame rate drops. The one thing that’s bugging me is that it feels a little jittery and I have a feeling that it might be the tv’s true motion that’s causing it. Annoyingly the TV doesn’t give any indication of what Hz it’s recieving and everything I can check on my computer says it’s outputting 60-120hz. Except when I go into the nvidia control panel it doesn’t show anything beyond 30hz which is what the website claimed. But how would I be able to tell a drop from 60fps to 58fps if I was at 30hz? Does this make sense?

From what I understand Nvidia released a driver allowing 4k 60 through HDMI. Its a compression technique for video information is my guess but I have not verified this. What I do know is that Nvidia Control panel seems to be most accurate for display settings. I have done another test on my 4k TV with my 7series Gtx Titan on Overwatch and used MSI Afterburner along with Nvidia's FPS counter. I am 100% certain I am playing at 4k 60hz (or at least over 30hz) when gaming.

Try this:
1. Get newest Nvidia Drivers
2. Reboot PC after installed
3. Open up Nvidia Control Panel (via right click desktop)
4. Check 4k Resolution and see if anything above 30hz is available in refresh rate
(for me it is)
