GTX960 worse than GTX760?

Why would they give the GTX960 a smaller buss size which = less bandwidth and then less cuda cores compared to the GTX760?

Aren't they meant to make the newer tech better?

Hello... the 900 series is a product line... and I imagine you will see a GT 910, I just hope they get away from using any more DDR2 in these cards, and fooling people they are getting a better card because of the larger memory size, like the 700 series. B )

But why would you make your latest product slower with less? the 760 might outperform the 960 from the looks of things

Hello... Because of the 128 bit memory? Wow to go from 256 bit to 128bit can be a huge performance blow... But thanks for the GTX970 option for us GTX760 owners... That card is 2x's the power and less energy on our power supplies. B )
How many of these product naming decisions get made by the Same persons or Previous owners?

That was rather off-topic.

OP, the 960 uses different architecture, so comparing it to a 760 is like comparing apples and oranges. That said, I really don't understand why Nvidia would plump for a 128-bit memory bus with less bandwidth than a 760. It seems that all they're doing is needlessly filling a gap between a 750 Ti and a 970. The problem here is that the 750 Ti will probably represent better value for money and the 970 will represent better performance, so the 960 could end up in no-man's-land.

The Geforce 900 series uses improved compression, so you don't need as much memory bandwidth to reach the same performance level. Leaks suggest the GTX 960 will be slightly more powerful than the GTX 760.

The GTX 980 has significantly less memory bandwidth than the GTX 780 Ti, yet still outperforms it; that shows how memory bandwidth may not be as much of a bottleneck for the GTX 960 as you'd expect.

Comparing specs between different tech doesnt work.

They reduced the memory bus because it takes up a lot of die space and consumes a lot of power. They manage to get more performance by using the cuda cores to compress colours giving higher effective memory bandwidth.

The 960 should perform better than the 760 while using a lot less power.

from what ive seen the 780ti outperforms the 980 in most cases but you should compare the 780 to the 980 and not the ti version

980 wins in most cases

Not really, its just more efficent to compress with GPU cores then dedicate die space to more memory bus.

If you look at the frame time deltas they are very similar to the 780 ti (sometimes better, sometimes worse).

You're using a synthetic benchmark, and outdated benchmark data for the GTX 760.

The more detailed leaked benchmarks of the GTX 960 show performance being much closer, maybe a 10% advantage for the 960.
