I am looking to upgrade from a ROG Maximus VIII Extreme motherboard to the newer Maximus XI Extreme and also from the I7 6700K to the I7 8700k I was wondering if instead of buying a new closed loop water cooler could I just keep the H100 I GTX I already have. Would it fit the new socket mount? just curious.

Solution
6700k to 8700k are the same physical socket size, the only difference is voltage requirements for 6/7th gen vs. 8/9 gen. There are a few boards out there that can actually support 6/7/8/9 gen CPUs, but most manufacturers want you to buy a new board, so they make them electronically incompatible. I just recently went from 6700k to 9700k and the the processor and cooler mounts fit perfectly, otherwise.

Yes, the socket is the same size, the cooler will fit.
You know what, I knew they would fit, had completely forgotten they were the same socket.

I upgraded my system to a new P3 case ,9600k and z390 mb and 3600 memory. I let Microcenter switch everything over. They told me that my h100i bracket which was on a 5820k would not fit the 9600k/z390. They asked if I had any other brackets at home which I couldn't find so I upgraded to a a H115i Pro.

Not sure if that helps or not.
