Had to slightly underclock my new 1070, is that normal?

I bought a 1070 and was testing some overclocks. Long story short, any increase to core clock causes flying black bits in overwatch, but works with most other games. 0 has KF2 crashing (due to flex) and some black bits in witcher 3. Setting to -20 seems to have fixed everything.

The core clock during boost is now 1936mhz according to afterburner, have I got a faulty 1070 or is that not too uncommon with cards/an acceptable top speed for a 1070?

What's the full model name of your gtx 1070 ?
If it's factory overclocked model, then yes due to insufficient quality control and testing your unit may not be able to hold pre-programmed overclock modes.
GTX 1070 standard boost clock is 1683mhz (base 1506mhz) btw.

If it's brand new... RMA for new card before your 15 Day return period expires. Don't waste time troubleshooting... only do that for older cards.. not Brand New ones.

Just Another Guy I agree that you should seek a RMA, while you still can. Question: What is the precise manufacturer and model number listed on the side of your power supply? And in what year did you purchase it. Your i7-930 came out in 2010, so I wonder if your PSU is equally as old. It would be helpful for the think tank that I like to call the Tom's Hardware community.

Well, it's an ebay one that had a good offer on it, that's why I'm asking. The model is the MSI Gaming X, which I think does come overclocked. Afterburner is reporting the non boost clock as 1582, which matches the specifications for that model. It says the boost clock should be 1771 however, but like I mentioned, it's being reported as 1936, so I dunno what's going on there 😛

The PSU is 650W, but before I was running my 680, and put in my brothers old 660TI as a dedicated physx processor, and I know the power draw of them both would be way higher than a single 1070.

Edit: It's a corsair, says TX650

In addition to the 24 pin socket on the motherboard, there is also an 8 pin socket. Is there a PCIe cable connected from the power supply to the 8 pin socket on the motherboard?

You can update BIOS of your graphics card.
1936mhz is way higher, than it's supposed to be.
  • Boost Clock / Base Clock / Memory Frequency
    1797 MHz / 1607 MHz / 8108 MHz (OC Mode)
    1771 MHz / 1582 MHz / 8008 MHz (Gaming Mode)
    1683 MHz / 1506 MHz / 8008 MHz (Silent Mode)

You said - you got it from ebay. So probably previous owner flashed custom BIOS into it.

Solution
Yeah there is one there :)

So I should be happy with the speed, and the -20 is actually kinda just offsetting a large bonus?

Is there a way I can see what BIOS the gpu is running?

Edit: Running furmark boosts the gpu to 1759. Running overwatch boosts it to 1949. It seems to get different boosts per application, maybe that's why OW couldn't go any higher?

If you see different GPU Boost frequencies, it is just the Nvidia GPU Boost 3.0 in action. It is nothing to worry about.

Your PSU may be the culprit — I may be wrong. Try increasing the power limit of the card and see at happens.
