When hackers broke into the computing system of Valve Software, they stole more than just the source code to Half-Life 2. They also stole enough game maps and other components to put together a playable build of the game. Today, five days after the first leak, they have released that build. The Release date for Half-life 2 has now been pushed back once again!! to April 2004.The hunt for the thieves is ongoing, but a rough timeline of events has emerged. Somewhere on or around Sept. 11, hackers broke into the email of Valve founder Gabe Newell, possibly utilizing a security hole in Microsoft (MSFT: Research, Estimates) Outlook. Eight days later, they made a copy of the game's source tree. Keystroke recorders were also installed on the computers of several other employees. The invasion was methodical and seems deliberately aimed at the developer.

i dont get it.... what the hell are they gonna do with it? pretend THEY designed hl2?

My ethicator machine must've had a built-in moral compromise spectral release phantasmatron! I'm a genius!

May their penises wither up and shrink.

Oh, sorry, my bad. They already have for them to do this. Goddamn fukin' assholes.

What a bummer...One of the most anticipated games of all time, and they've gotta put a smudge on it. I hope they get caught and put in jail. [conspiracy theory]Maybe it was Nvidia being angry for Valve's previous comments[/conspiracy theory]

uncaring, american pig-dog

[stirs things up further] Obviously it's because of Valve and ATI cosying up together and Nvidia is jealous at not being invited for a threesome [/stirs things up further]

Well, I forgot to update you with the freshest stuff from
Valvesoftware.

Detonator-52.13-ANON got leaked today, its the new NVidia
drivers for HL2, though i have no fancy video card to test the
driver on.

Btw., for those of you still thinking -ANON is a group, i have
to say it isnt. Its just Anonymous.

To all those saying HL2 was delayed because of the hacking
action, ill just remind you that what was leaked is what Valve
has, nothing more and nothing less, so its pretty good to
understand it wasnt finished yet.

Also I'd like to point out the E3 was one big fake by Valve.
Ever tried to kill that soldier in physicstown ? Notice the
door will still get kicked ? No scripted sequences ?

To everyone saying this is no Beta: I'd like to point out that
THIS is what you wanted Valve to release on 9/30/03, theres no
such thing as a much better release in Valves network!

To Valve: I suggest you stop lying to your customers about how
much was stolen/compromised, or I'll have to release everything
just to prove my point. And you know what you got, as I do.

look man, i agree that those hackers should just burn in hell, but i gotta comment on valve´s security. If they saw how Doom3 and halo was leaked, then they shold have been at least a bit wee more careful. hacking prevention isnt impossible if there are methodical security checks and procedures.

My computer is so fast it proves the theory of relativity wrong... 😱

i mean, you know you got a hot game being developed, and you know from the past that there are always attempts to try to steal your code, so why not be a little more careful.

Yup. That is what many are saying and what I was going to post in this thread but I didnt realize the hackers had everything valve has.
I was almost positive this whole stolen code thing, although serious, no reason for a delay.
People are going to get the code if they want.. so just release it, do changes or fixes through patches through their wondererous steam network.
That way you'd get all xmas sales and beat doom3 out the door by far.
Everyone knows if they could do this, stolen code or not they would!
They care more about the massive return in profit a release before christmas and end of year would give much more back to valve and vivendi.

On a side note, any network admin with something this important to a company would know not to use outlook. I have a degree in network administration. I learned that my first year of school, what an idiot. And why it was not on a private network inside valve instead of having a way out to the net is beyond me.
You could at least LIMIT your chances of it getting leaked.

But I suppose their way leaves lots of excuses open.
I guess I'm just a little pissed at everyone involved.
But if those hackers didnt do it, it would be someone else trying and if it wasnt goign to happen then, something as serious wouldve happened later anyway.
When you conduct your security as valve has, what do you expect.
I'm sure there were tons of kids trying to get that crap out of their network.

What a fuckwit.

The E3 demo was just that, a *demo*. Of what the game was *going to be*. Sure, they didn't make allowances for all possible events. Why? Because it was strictly for the E3 demonstration, a controlled environment. This was never meant to be public. Who the hell thinks they're not going to finish coding the AI for the final release??

As for the comment that this is what Valve were going to release in September... this guy must be a complete idiot. I didn't realise people with such low intelligence could use hacker scripts. Companies don't release pre-betas to the public, it just doesn't happen, and Valve are hardly an exception!

And just to remind everybody, the release was pushed back so that Valve could finish the game. Since the news of the leak came out, there have been NO official announcements regarding release dates. Valve have NOT pushed the game back because of the leak, and to suggest this is true is just bolstering this idiot's ego.

So there.

He's saying that it was delayed because it wasn't finished, NOT because of the leak. He offers proof by leaking the beta, which was the most complete version of half life up to that date. You can see it's not finished.

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

Maybe I misunderstood. However, I still don't believe for an instant that he has any actual proof that what he stole is the latest build of the game.

Perhaps not, but why would he lie? He knows when he got the build, he knows what valve had finished when he was in...

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

Not that he's lying, just... how does he know Valve don't have anything more advanced than what he has there, possibly being kept on an unconnected computer?

By all accounts, he broke into Gabe's personal system. That doesn't necessarily equate to "every computer in Valve".

My guess is that if he managed to get the source, gabe's email, and the beta, he knows pretty much everything that's going on there...

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

Maybe the game was finished and maybe it wasnt. I have played the leaked beta whatever you want to call it and its nothing more than a test simulation. More like a guide to those who will be mapping, moding etc. for the HL2 engine.

One ? I have is if Valve was ready to release its game in Sept? Then would it have been packaged with ATI XT cards?

I have read about vouchers here and their, but no XT cards are availalbe for purchase yet, retail. This makes me wonder if they had already sent out the game to be packaged with ATI cards only a lump sum. Something went wrong somewhere along the line and wamm make up a leaked test version, say source code was stolen, halt sale of XT cards and recall all the packaged games for future release, put vouchers in with the XT cards and wait for the game to come out later.

What ever the story will once again wait for the results.

No company would post the source code to their latest engine on the Internet just so they didn't have to tell their fans that something had gone wrong. Things go wrong with games all the time, and gamers understand that. Releasing the source code so as to have an excuse would be insane.

That's gotta be the stupidest conspiracy theory that I've ever heard. Why on Earth would anyone go to that much trouble just to postpone a game release??

Get some sleep.
