Hi everyone i have a question to ask :) i will be purchasing a laptop very soon and i have the choice to upgrade my hard disk. The machine comes with 1TB 7200RPM (SATA III - 6GB/s) - Default. My choices are:

1TB (w/ 8GB SSD Memory) 5400RPM Seagate Hybrid 64MB Cache (SATA III - 6GB/s)
Or
2TB 5400RPM Samsung Spinpoint M9T (SATA - 6GB/s)

I know that SSD will make the hard run faster and the other has more space. Which one should i go for? Need some advice.......Thank you

You want to look for a totally different storage drive.

SSHD is great choice, since it will give you SSD like performance for most used programs at lower cost than a true SDD and often with larger capacity.
However, you want 7200 RPM drives with 64 MB cache - not 5400 RPM.

Optimally you want a true SSD drive where you install Windows and programs (possibly games) and another drive for storage - consider an ekstern HDD?

Hi there gsaroberts,

1 TB 7200 RPM drive is a decent choice for a laptop. Keep in mind that only loading times/boot time depends on the drive's performance. The overall laptop performance depends on other components as well.

Apart from that, you will get better performance with the hybrid drive.
On the other hand, you will get poorer performance with the 5400 RPM drive. Yet, you will have more storage space.

So, it's really up to you to decide.
- You can keep the drive and get an external one for just storing media.(I, personally, would pick that option)
- You can get the hybrid drive and make the HDD that comes with the laptop an external drive(with some third party external enclosure).
- Get the big 2TB drive that has less RPM.

Let me know how this goes,

hi Victorian & D_Know_WD,

I thought i acknowledge you both in one thread 😀 thank you so much for replying back to me 😀

I need to get this out 1st coz i did not mention it earlier. My bad :) i am not a gamer and i will not be playing games. I will be purchasing The ASUS G751JT-WH71(WX) for only my graphic designing/ photoshop work and after effects work. As for after effects i am still learning the software and i won't be doing any heavy 3d rendering. I am only learning it for mini presentations and logo animations 😀

The option was there to customise it so i decided to up the ram to the 32 gb Corsair Vengeance CL10 DDR3 1866MHz Dual Channel Memory. I wanted to get more space as well but one guy said that having an SDD is a good option coz of the performance. Then i got really confused!!! I am not a tech wiz like u guys and all i want is the machine to perform at its max :) if you guys say that i don't need the SDD and just stick with default or just go for 2 Tb then i will.

I would say that GPU and RAM are the components that will affect your work the most.
I think that a 7200 RPM drive would do the job. With 32 Gigs of RAM, I don't think that you will notice the SSD performance improvement. Go through this short article: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/optimize-photoshop-cc-performance.html

You should think of a way to back up your data as well. The data that you don't want to lose should be stored on at least two places.
