Hi All,

Anyone knows how to remove the heads from the samsung F2 hd154ui without buying the expensive tools for $400 or more?
I know all about the risks included just want to do some diy recovery.

regards,

Solution
Thanks.

Most of the tools involved seem to be related to keeping the arm, heads, etc. all aligned and separate.

Via the removal comb, cocoon, alignment pins, and so forth.

Not an issue per se if you are not interested in data recovery.

What about the following video?

Especially where the small screw on the underside is removed around 1:20 or so into the clip.

The thing is, the part where the disk is seated is sterile, if you open it and dust goes in - game over. I highly doubt you are going to solve anything by messing around with the disk platters and head.

If you take the drive apart, you will discover what tools you might need for "head removal".

Of course...you won't be able to get any data off this drive.
But you will see how the heads are connected to the rest of it.

I suggest opening up an already dead drive first. Just to see.

In agreement with USAFRet.

I tend to collect and take apart old hard drives just for the magnets and shiny platters (scares squirrels - at least sometimes, for awhile...)

Most of the dis-assembly only requires small torx head screwdrivers. Just a couple of sizes to remove the various screws. A couple of which are hidden under the drive's labling.

So if you are not concerned about the data per se (i.e., sterile room, etc.) no expensive tools are needed.

Just study the assembly beforehand to before working your way down to the heads. Some very fine wires and connectors along the way.

Fragile.

@ USAFRET & Ralston28,

I already did open the drive but whats holding the head on its place isn't a torx screw or s'thing else.
It just has a hole with screw thread and the only thing u can do is insert a srew to tighten it up but ofcourse i dont want to tighten it but loosen it up.

If u look at the tool form hddsurgery u will see that the tool they are using is able to loosing the surrounding of the screw in the middle.
I'would like to know how to loosen the screw with the screw thread

The head on the arm, or the whole arm?

I'm not sure what you're hoping to accomplish by replacing the actual 'head'.

There's a reason why data recovery costs rise sharply when the software fails to do the job.

Clean room, tools, experience...

Replacement drives are cheap
Backups are also cheap, if you do them the day before the drive dies.

Thanks.
