Hard disk noise on a Sony X505

Hi all, I just bought a Sony X505 laptop and it looks gorgeous. Sadly, although it's fanless and should be virtually noiseless the hard drive emits a very high pitched whine that's driving me nuts. I shall make some enquiries to see if it's faulty, but in the meantime I have two questions.

1) How do I set the hard disk power management off time to less than 3 minutes? Preferably 10 seconds, but 1 minute will do. Are there any XP Pro power tools that will do this?

2) Every now and again something accesses the HDD and starts the noise all over again. Does windows have any processes that do this which can be turned off? The other apps I'll look into seperately.

If anyone is thinking of buying one of these, I dare not take it into a meeting in case I get asked to leave for giving people migraines; likewise libraries or similar. It's probably no worse than high pitched noise from my main PC, but because it's the *only* noise in the room it's deafening.

Any help appreciated. 🙂

I checked the model in the shop, the sound is lost amongst air conditioning and a dozen computers but it definately makes the same noise. Ways to stop the HDD quickly are thus essential...

If you have enough ram, disable the swap file. This reduces most hd activity.
