last night I tried using my external seagate goflex hard disk(1 TB).My hard disk shows signs of powering on but does not get detected in both my disk manager as well as in my devices and printers menu in control panel.I had previously used my hard ware 1 day before and it worked flawlessly.I have filled the harddisk to the brim and full of personal files(all my childhood photos :( ).I appreciate any way to get the files or at least a part of it.

Hi there Charan Karthikeyan,

Have you tried something simple as just attaching the drive with a different USB cable? If you haven't, you can try that.
In case the issue persists, unfortunately, either the enclosure or the HDD itself has failed. In this case, and given the fact that the data stored on the drive is crucial, you will need to contact a data recovery company. Most of the HDD manufacturers offer their own data recovery services or have some sort of trusted data recovery partners.

Apart from all this, you should always keep your important stuff stored on at least two places as mechanical drives could fail at any time.

Cheers,

after trying all the possible solution i gave up and handed it over to my local service guy, what he tells me is that the HEAD in the hard disk is gone and cannot be fixed but he says he may be able to recover my data for 500$ which i think is very high as hes not sure he can recover all the data completely(he says its a 50-50 chance of recovering it) and since i only need some files from it i have turned down the offer. Is there anyway i can recover it other than giving it to someone else.I'd appreciate any kind of suggestions.
P.S I know my way around hardware.

Yeah, data recovery services are not really cheap ones.
In case there is something wrong with the read/write head, there is no way to recover the data with some software tools.

I doubt that you will be able to recover the data by yourself. Furthermore, you need to know that HDDs should be opened up in a dust clean environment. Data recovery companies have special rooms for that.
Sorry but I can't really help you on that. :(

One thing you can do is to maybe open up a new thread with more specific title. Maybe someone will be able to help you out.
