Hi there

my main backup Hard Disk 4TB WDC suddenly disappeared

After trying out different methods of connecting (to ensure it's not a cable fault or USB mount), I've now connected it to my main computer directly to the MB, and it appears as uninitiated and unallocated

I've ran CrystalDiskInfo and it says "Good" health..

When scanning with HD Tune all sectors appeared as red (no screenshot) - SMART was not available for the disk

GetData initially spat out multiple I/O Errors (until Sector 3000 maybe)

And after was able to scan (currently in process)

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I DO?

DO YOU THINK I CAN SALVAGE ANYTHING?

MANY THANKS

Depends on how much are you willing to pay for professional data recovery. Since at this point, your HDD is toast (unallocated partition is really bad sign).

If the data on your HDD is valuable, i'd contact data recovery firm and pay them a hefty sum for data recovery. Because they have specialized tools and know-how to recover the data.

Using (free) software, for the most part, doesn't help. If lucky, you may recover some, but not all. Hence why data recovery firms exist. Since when you could recover all your data with (free) software on your own, all data recovery firms would've been out of business a long time ago.

There are many data recovery firms out there, but one of the best is DriveSavers,

Oh wow. Thanks, appreciate the directness..

Thankfully I just realised I did have a 6 day old backup of the disk..

Either way, thank you for recommending the recovery company

DriveSavers are seriously over-priced. There are many cheaper services which are as good or better.

I would clone your drive with HDDSuperClone and then run data recovery tools against the clone.

BTW, if this is a My Book drive, then it is likely to be encrypted, in which case your data recovery tools would find nothing. You need to reinstall the drive in its enclosure in order for the enclosure's firmware to decrypt it.

In any case, stop thrashing your drive and clone it. The cardinal rule of data recovery is never to recover the same sector twice. If you can read it, save it. You may not get a second chance.

DMDE would be my choice for a data recovery tool. Its free version can recover up to 4000 files of any size from any one folder per click. It can also repair partition damage.

Like i said, there are others. Including, but not limited to: DTI Data, SecureDataRecovery, WeRecoverData.

In the end, it's up to OP if to fiddle around themselves, making any further professional data recovery more difficult and thus, more expensive, or not.
