I bought a new PC with a 40 GB hard disk but when I looked at drive C in " My Computer " it is indicated there that my hard disk is only 37.2 GB. Was I short-changed by the PC vendor?

Yeah. The guys making hard drives figured they didn't have anything to do with computers/bits/bytes. A kilo is just that: 1000. 1k=1,000 1M=1,000,000

But with computers, it takes 8 bits to make a byte. 1024 bytes for a kilo-byte, and 1024 Kilobytes to make a Megabyte, etc. The proper word to describe this phenomenon is "Ca$$h". As in the phase, "I'd like 6 fat sacks of ca$$h money, to go, please." The larger a hard drive manufacturer can report the drive space, the larger the amount of Ca$$h is involved in the transaction.

Makes the drive a little more marketable.

It's a government standard. It's not a marketing scheme of the hard drive manufactures. <A HREF="http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/binary.html" target="_new"><font color=green>This is the only link I could find in a short amount of time</font color=green></A>

Thanks for the info. I am still a neophyte as far as PC and the Internet are concern. I am doing my homework though, so in due time I hope I can contribute something to this "community". You guys are good! :)
