hard disks not shown in disk manager

I'm not an expert in computer.
So I really need your help. You see my hard disks was detected but it can't be shown in my computer or even in disk manager.
I've seen a lot and done a lot but I still don't get what is bios and how it can help me.
Can you guys help me?
The hard disk suddenly can't be detected when I was doing something important. I don't even have a copy of that document and I need to send by next month and it's a six months work.
I'm really grateful if you guys help me.

Can you please provide more details regarding the drive and your system? Is the drive an external or an internal one?
I'd suggest you to check Device Manager first. Here's an article from MS that explains how to get there: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/where-is-device-manager
Check under Disk drives there, if your HDD is recognized by the system.
If it's an external drive, try plugging it in a different USB port on your computer and even using a different USB cable. If you have access to another computer, you could also try the HDD there and see if it will get recognized.
If it's an internal HDD, you'd need to power down your system and re-seat the HDD to the SATA port and even try...
