Let me begin by saying, i am aware there are many threads with this problem, but i think my problem may be a problem with the hard drive, i have tried most fix's i could find already and have been messing around with this for far too long.

now specs

  • Windows 10
    skylake i5 6500
    asrock h170m pro4s
    1 TB WD Purple HDD
    16 Gb ddr4
    Nvidia 950
I first noticed my computer was using 100% disk pretty much when i built it some 6 months ago. I went through the paces to fix it, and disabling notifications at the time seemed to do the trick. BUT the problem seemed to come back just this week, i noticed spotify was glitching, and sure enough disk usage was at 100% constantly. So i went through more fix's. Its hard to say when it happened but my computer quickly became unusable. I would have to wait for minutes for each click to register, and working on it was becoming increasingly difficult. I booted into safe mode and tried to continue with messing with windows search, and super fetch. I read online that Avast might be the problem so i uninstalled that, as you might imagine, none of these fix's worked, so seeing as i had nothing important on my computer i decided to reinstall windows 10.

I first tried windows' utility, instructing to delete all my files (again nothing important), but after the installation finished i got an error, that the installation failed and i should try again. This was, as you imagine, infuriating. I figured i should do a disk wipe just in case. I first tried my tried and true DBAN, but it would not work. it gave me the error, "cat: can't open '/proc/cmdline' : No such file or directory". Upon reading i found it might be a bios problem, a safety feature to prevent accidental disk loss? i gave up and tried KillDisk instead. Sure enough, after 2 hours my disk was clean.

After KillDisk i went ahead and installed windows 10 from my usb stick i made when my computer was built. It still worked, installed windows 10 fine this time, and i was able to boot in. Hurray! Disk usage was also BELOW 100%!! Now that i was done celebrating, i began the process of installing drivers, starting with the lan driver. I ran into trouble here instantly. I downloaded the driver from Asrock's site for the lan, and unzipped it onto a flash drive. I plugged it in and ran the application labeled "autorun". Nothing happened, i saw the process pop up in task manager called "intel autorun", or something. and disk usage instantly hit 100%. After waiting some 10 minutes for it to do anything, i gave up. I forced the process to stop, and in doing so disk usage lowered down to 0 After trying different fix's for some hour or so, i downloaded the newest driver from intels website, and installed that. THIS seemed to work. I now had internet, but after i installed it, disk usage was stuck back at 100%. This leads me to believe it must be a problem with a process attached to the internet service's.

Again i tried all the tricks in the book, disabling notifications, disabling services, running command lines. Nothing worked. I gave up and tried installing ubuntu to see if that had problems. I figured if ubuntu could install fine the problem had to be windows, if it was not fine it would be the HDD. Sure enough, the installation went fine, but when i tried to boot into ubuntu it threw an error and the error popup would show for a second, then disappear, then appear again and continues.

At this point i have been working on my desktop for 13 hours and need to go to bed, Tomorrow i suppose i will start by running KillDisk again, and seeing if i can install ubuntu after that, if that does not work, i suppose i need to buy a new hard drive? My last piece of evidence, if you will, is that my hard drive is a Western Digital Purple, i understand these are made for surveillance purpose's, not so much desktop use. for the record, i bought it because at the time it was on sale. I read that some people thought the WD purple would perhaps wear out faster because they are designed for different read writes? i don't really understand it but thought it was worth mentioning.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this has been driving me crazy!
PS This is my first time writing a post, but have always been impressed with the content on these forums!

As of this morning, i wiped the hdd and attempted to install windows 10 again, however after multiple attempts of it throwing errors and freezing during boot after installation, i decided to purchase a new hdd, settling on the WD Blue this time, i will update if this fix's the problem when i get it. If this does not fix it, hey at least i have 2 TB of storage now!
