Hard drive busy all the time

My hard drive never seems to be quite. Even though it may have been sitting idle for hours the hard drive just keeps on rattling away. Does anyone know why it does like this and how I can put a stop to all of this activity?

Try downloading Process Monitor... it should show you what applications are accessing your hard disk constantly: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
