Hard drive cannot be detected by OS

A classmate of mine brought in his laptop which he claims to have been looping to the BIOS for almost 2 years now. When I checked, there is no HDD to be found and I tried plugging in that HDD on my desktop PC and i worked fine all the files can be detected. Is there a way to fix this?

Make and model of the laptop?
Have you made sure the laptop's motherboard BIOS is up to date?
If it's been like this for two years, why wasn't it brought to the attention of the store your friend purchased it from? It could've easily been solved with an RMA during warranty period.

Its an old laptop its well past warranty and he did not know that I am fixing computers. Its an ASUS K555L
