Hello i recently did a full scan with avast. The antivirus spotted 29 infected elements and put them in the quarantine chest (something like that). It seems like it deleted something that is important for one of my external drives to work. If i plug my external drive it tells me taht i need to format it... something about a missing registry...Here's the quarantine chest with every suspicious element... is any of these an important file that should not be deleted?

Thanks in advance!

That's not a good sign at all.
It's quite possible the file allocation tables on the disk are corrupt. You can try the windows scan - right click on drive in my computer, tools - check now.

There is a high chance you have lost everything and need to format the drive.

Have you tried the external hard drive in another computer first to see if it is working? If it works I would try another antivirus or use windows recovery and boot it to an earlier state. When the hard drive was working.

Hi there HuskyPsycho,

How is the drive recognized under Disk Management? If you have some data stored on it, then I believe you can see if some data recovery tool would help.
Also, you can try to access it under Ubuntu: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode
Just boot from a CD or a flash drive and see whether the drive would be accessible. In case it is, you can get the data that you need and reformat the drive afterwards.

Cheers,
D_Know_WD :)

I just tried accessing it in 2 other computers. Same dialog in both: "You need to format the disk ... etc" :/

In device Manager not only does the system recognise the external drive but it also says it works properly! Can you elaborate on the ubuntu fix? I have several important files in there and im getting pretty desperate at this point :/ http://imgur.com/9D6IOKa

you have tried running a chkdsk on the hard drive. Run a command prompt as administrator. type in chkdsk E: or whatever your driver letter is for that drive

Well, I've asked about how is the drive recognized by Disk Management not Device Manager. :)
How to go over there: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=5ujVF3

The Ubuntu thing is not really a fix. You just need to boot(don't install it) Ubuntu from a CD or a flash drive. That way, you will use a different operating system. In some cases, Ubuntu handles problematic drives better. Just see if the drive would be accessible under Ubuntu.

LEt us know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)
