hard drive compatability

Physically speaking, it can be done as long as both have the same interface. Current hard drives have SATA interface which replaced EDI-E interfaces several years ago. They are not compatible with each other.

However, do not expect the laptop to simply boot up. The Windows operating system on the hard drive will only work with the Compaq laptop because it is tied to the Compaq's motherboard. If a different motherboard is detected, then it will not boot into Windows.

You would actually need to buy a copy of Widows, format the hard drive and install Windows from scratch.
