Hard drive dead buy windows again?

Recently my 1tb hdd died and I'm getting a new one. I got my computer used from a friend and I don't have the windows disks. Do I have to buy windows again or is there any way for me to get windows installed on my device again?

If you have the serial number, you can reinstall Windows without getting a new copy. It should be on a sticker on the case.

If you don't have the serial number, than you will need a new copy.
