I recently bought a new Z170-A motherboard and tried installing my old samsung hd502hj harddrive on it. However, I noticed that it won't recognize the drive because the drive doesn't spin after booting up. Upon further investigation, I discovered that the drive will only spin when the SATA cable is not plugged in. The motherboard also recognizes my DVD drive and my other SSD, it's just this HDD which doesn't spin and doesn't get recognized.
I also tried to update the motherboards firmware with no results.
Another thing I tried is unplug the SATA cable, wait for it to spin and then plug it in. This allowed me to get to the "starting windows" screen but is quickly followed by a BSOD.
Is there anything I can do at this point? Also, I'm not sure is it's the MOBO's problem or the HDD's problem since it gets recognized in the BIOS after doing the unplug -> wait to spin -> plugin trick.
Thanks.
