hard drive extension

hello friends i have problem with my extension cable usb2.0. when i attached my external wd my passport ultra 2TB hard drive with it. it show the hard drive but when i open its folders it hangs for sometime and then respond. but when it directly connected my hard drive to motherboard it respond quickly and everything goes fine. so please suggest me what to do to connect it via extension cable because the cable come with external hdd is very short in length. if some cable is fine then recommend me.
MY PC CONFIGURATION IS-
Motherboard - ASUS P8H61-MLX
Processor - Intel Corei3-2100
PSU - Corsair VS450
Graphic card- ASUS GTX 750Ti OC 2gb
internal HDD - western digital 500gb

The hard drive enclosure likely goes to sleep after a period of inactivity. Here is a short article that you may find helpful in preventing hard drives and external hard drive sleep.

Try a different extension cable as it's probably just bad. Or some ports don't supply enough power to go that far (use a power brick or powered USB hub).

Keep in mind the maximum total length of USB is 5 meters (or about 16' 5") which includes the device's cable and the internal wiring from your case to the motherboard.
