Hard drive failure caused by reset?

While doing a factory reset on Windows 10, my hard drive failed. It shut off during the reset and didn't turn back on. When I tried to power it on, it went into a loop of booting and crashing before ever reaching Windows. I went into BIOS and ran its diagnostics, which told me that my hard drive isn't functional anymore.

I have two Dell Inspiron 660s desktops. The other one wasn't working, so I took its hard drive and put it in the computer that had the hard drive fail. I want to reset Windows, but I don't want this hard drive to fail, too. Has anyone heard of this happening before? Was it just a coincidence, or did Windows cause it during the reset?

Just bad luck it sounds like. I suggest getting a cheap ssd. Make a windows 10 clean install off your other HD. Here is a 1tb HD and a 275GB SSD if your looking for a new drive.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Storage: Crucial MX300 275GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($69.98 @ B&H)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($49.49 @ OutletPC)
Total: $119.47
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

That's not bad luck. Same thing just happened to me. Was giving to someone for school and reset to clear out my junk. So now it doesn't read hdd at all. And I tried 4 different hard drives. Says something about no operating system also. I'm seriously wondering if it wiped the whole hard drive off. Crazy.

Exactly the same things happened when using the Windows 10 reset on a perfectly good HP G6 laptop. Dead hard drive. Obviously not that uncommon. Thanks Microsoft.
I've tried everything to no avail.
