Hi,

A friend of mine gave me his laptop to fix as it wasnt booting up.

After looking at the bios I found the problem was that the hard drive wasnt detected. I swapped the hard drive out for another and all was good. That was four months ago.
Now he has given it me back says its not booting again. Checked the bios and same thing. I am reluctant to replace the hard drive until i know what the problem is.

I have tried testing the hard drives but non of my computers detect it. Any ideas??

Hey Emeraldmind. I'm not sure you can do anything about it if no system you try it with can detect it. Does the drive spin up and if it does, are there any unusual sounds/noises coming from the drive? There might be a problem with the environment where he is using the drive. Does it overheat, is it properly connected etc.?

Anything obvious? Your friend is killing the HDD one way or another. Two drives in less than 6 months is pretty clear.

Unfortunately there's no way for me to give you any sort of definite answer to that having in mind the info that I have. How long did he had the previous hard drive before it failed? It could be just due to a lot of bad luck as well, although that's not very likely. There might be something wrong with the laptop as well which could be causing the issues with the HDDs.
