Are hard drive cooling fans really a waste of money? I was looking at a kit for $14. that takes up a front bay? Is it kinda a waste?
I have a 80g Max 7200 steel bearing drive

If that's all you have, you shouldn't need it.

You shouldn't need cooling for that drive. It gets as hot as 21 degrees celsius at normal operating temperature, and it's rated to go up to 55 degrees celsius. (although you should never go there ;P)

You can do what I do and put your hard drive higher up in the drive bay, then put a large fan below it. No need to screw it or attach it save for using duct tape or something. It works great for me, reduces temperature quite a bit. If you use a silencer fan then the noise added should be negligible (20db).

Yup, you're still right :)
It's still not required - most people don't need them.
