Hard drive format

Using command prompt I tryed to format c: /Y. It says cannot open volume for direct access. What can I do now

You may be able to solve this by entering into Safe Mode and then perform the format. If that does not work then I would create a boot disk or create an Ubuntu bootable flash or disk, boot from the Ubuntu media and then use Ubuntu to format the drive.

The hard drive is not being recognized by my computer at all reason being my original hard drive has a registry error. How can I fix using command prompt, I need all my music and pics of my children being born.

I'm at a lost as to what you're actually are trying to accomplish. Your first post had you trying to format the drive but now your second post has you trying to recover your data. Can you please clarify as to what you are attempting to achieve?

Apologies as I did not read your first post properly, you cannot format your system drive. You will need to use a boot disk to format the drive.
