Hi,

I recently built a new computer for a friend. We installed a SSD for Windows and a 2TB as a secondary. Soon after all data on the 2TB drive vanished on boot.

I originally though the drive was bad so I had him send it back and get a new one.

The issue has occurred again, all data has been wipped on boot.

How can a hard drive get formated if it's not the drive malfunctioning?

Hi there Matt_176,

How does the HDD appear under My Computer and Disk Management? Is it accessible?

One thing you can try is to scan the drive with some data recovery tool and see if the data would be recoverable: https://www.lifewire.com/free-data-recovery-software-tools-2622893

Also, I believe it would be a nice idea to attach the drive with different cables to another SATA port. See if the issue persists.

Running some antivirus/malware scans will not hurt as well.

Cheers,
