So I have a 3TB WD external hard drive that has been slowing down when I first click on it to access the files. SO I got another hard drive and *attempted* to use Robocopy to back the drive up. I typed 'robocopy r:\*.* n:\r backup\*.* /s to copy the slow drive (R) to the new drive 👎 into the directory (r backup) and the /s flag to copy the sub-directories. Sounds good on paper.... 🙁

So it starts screaming.... Obvious going way to fast than what modern hard drives can keep up with. So I break the operation to see what is what....

after each file, it said something to the affect of "file not available" or something similar.

I can see the files in the ROOT directory. There is a JPG picture, and when I click on it, it says the picture is either deleted or is not available. But yet the icons are still there. The sub directories are even worse. They now show as empty. Yet when I check the drive properties, it shows 2.53TB used and 201GB free, so the files are still there.

**UPDATE** When I look under Properties/Security it says "The requested security information is either unavailable or can't be displayed. PLEASE HELP!!!

Let me guess, the model is ST3000DM001 right? This model saw extremely high failure rate due to a problem with the media cache and auto-reallocation functions. It causes the drive to keep getting stuck in a busy state and eventually timeout before it responds. If you keep pushing it though, it'll kill the heads eventually and become a very expensive recovery. If the drive is working at the moment I'd say backup your data as fast as possible while it's working.

Hi there SirScotty,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. 🙁

Is the HDD working fine now?
In case it is, I would agree with JaredDM and say that it would be a really nice idea to back up the data stored on it.
After that, you can run both short and extended DLG tests on the drive: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=2RB0JY
The results should show you the overall health status of the drive.

Is it under warranty?

Let us know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

Actually this is a WD MyBook external.
