Ok so I have a weird question and I'm sorry if it has been asked before I wasn't able to find any similar questions. I have a computer that I built in 2009 and at the time I had an older type hard drive so I used it. Sometime after putting Windows on the older drive I bought a sata drive and hooked it up for more storage. Now I have an external drive that I am not able to find the power cord for it so I unhooked my DVD rw drive and hooked the external up as an internal drive. It worked and I was able to access the drive but now, weeks after it had worked, when the external drive is hooked up I get a msg of bootmgr missing. I can disconnect the drive and it boots just fine but I can't get the pc to see the external anymore. I have things on the drive that I don't want to lose. Is there anything I can do. Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Can you try this external HD in another computer? If it works in another computer, I suggest a DR specialist recommendation: if this HD can be seen but the data folders and files are not easily copied to another media -- if affordable, if possible, usb or dvd boot Macrium Reflect or anything similar, either do a one-pass sector by sector clone or a one-pass sector by sector full image of this whole HD onto another external HD. Then, continue with data recovery with any usb or dvd booted utility or utilities that you are comfortable with.
