My internal HDD makes a massive amount of noise when the monitor goes off to concern energy. The noise completely stops instantly when I awake it by touching the mouse or keyboard. It sounds like it's at full tilt like when it's accessing files or writing data.

It's really annoying and I'm not entirely sure if it's normal behaviour or not. It's a Hitachi HUA721010KLA330, assuming that's where the fault lies, of course. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers.

You can try catching the process that does that. Launch Resource Monitor and open Disk section.
Next time pc goes idle and disk activity starts, maximize Resource Monitor and make a screenshot.
Post it here.

I have the same problem, I have an 8TB HGST Deskstar NAS drive and everytime the computer is at iddle on or off it does that noise and it hits 100% load. I've tried leaving it for 2 hours but it didn't stop. Nothing I saw on the net worked because that's for disc C and mine is just an additional disc for storage. I have it shared over my local network I thought that was the problem but I have 2 other 8TB shared drives and none have that problem, they're from different brands, I also got another HGST 8TB not shared that doesn't do these things.

Your drive doesn't make that noise when the screen turns off, basically it's because if the PC is at iddle with no use, the drive starts doing this, the fact that you turn the screen on or move your mouse is actually "not idling" so that's why it solves the problem. Bare in mind, I've had the drive for 2 months, haven't had this problem until now. I'll try and do the following things:

-Run a Check Disk function or whatever test
-Try another HGST shared on the net (to see if the problem is that these drives have issues when shared)
-Try a different SATA port or cable or changing the drive letter (doubt it will help but who knows)
-Unplug the PC from the power wall, turning off the PSU and pressing the power button.

Will report back here if those work as I see lots of people have this problem
