Hard drive needs to be checked for consistency?

My computer has been giving me an error message upon start up, after the windows 7 boot screen that says my hard drive needs to be checked for consistency. It then tries to do the check and fails to succeed. Then the computer boots as normal and I am noticing no performance loss at all.

why am I getting this error message and what can i do to fix it?

Because windows has discovered a error in the files its could have been shut down improper or loss of power ect try running scandisk in windows and check the box where it says repair and fix.

Unfortunately, your HDD is most probably failing. This is why, you need to back up the data stored on it as soon as possible.
After that, you can just test the drive with some of these tools: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
