My old hard drive recently crashed, so I went out and bought a new one. My motherboard detects the new hard drive, but when I go to install Windows XP, it doesn't detect it.

My motherboard is an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, and the new (albeit old) hard drive is a Hitachi HD31000. The hard drive is SATA, and the connections seem to be good. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No XP won't read a USB drive. Only floppys for slip stream. And its not the Chipset drivers you need its the RAID drivers on the site.

But now that i look at it they only have the SIL drivers not the nvidia drivers. What SATA port do you have them plugged into? There are 8 on your motherboard. Try one of the 4 on the right if its not already.
You may have to go to the ASUS site and download the Nvidia and Sil raid Drivers and either 1) Slipstream it into the CD or 2) use a Floppy drive to load the drivers and hit F6 when you first get the blue screen when XP install loads.

XP doesn't have the drivers for those two SATA chipset built in. When you go to the ASUS site it will be the two under the RAID section.

Would a USB Flash Drive suffice? Also, thank you for the quick reply.

Yeah, was thinking of just going and buying a physical copy of W7, but I'd rather use what I have on hand at the moment. Don't get paid for another week, and my laptop didn't come with a physical copy of W7.

this is most likely due to the fact that XP does not come with SATA drivers and therefore does not recognize the controller.

you will need to download the Chipset driver Version V6.65 from the Asus Website under Other

Create a folder on the desktop called SATA Drivers and extract the files into it. The files you need are located in the IDE->WinXP->SATA_IDE folder

you can slipstream the driver into XP.

The link below will give you step by step instructions. You can ignore steps 1 and 2 if you downloaded the driver above and extracted the files into a folder called SATA Driver folder. In step 13 you will need to point it to the nvata.inf file.

I had tried using all 8 SATA ports at first, but all of them failed to be read by XP. I'll try again tomorrow with the RAID drivers after I borrow a Floppy drive from my brother. If it still fails to read the hard drive, would it just be better for me to get a copy of Vista or Windows 7?

I got it to work. Had to use a floppy to get the right drivers apparently. My old hard drive was also a SATA drive, but my friend was the one that had installed it for me. I'm guessing this is exactly what he did, though I'm still not sure why XP wasn't reading my hard drive. Different version of the OS maybe?

Anyways, thank you to everyone that replied. Helped a lot. Cheers =D
