hard drive not picking up on desktop

Unfortunately, the drop of your external drive most probably has damaged it and that's why you are unable to get it recognized on either your desktop or your laptop. I'd recommend you to go and check in Disk Management and see if the drive shows up there at least (http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/disk-management-windows-8.htm )
Another thing you should try is using your HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool and check the health of the drive. You should be able to find the free software on their website.
I'd recommend you to always keep a back up of your data on another location, so you wouldn't suffer the cost of data loss when such unfortunate events happen. Mechanical HDDs are...
