hard drive password lock

I have a chance to buy a laptop that includes a hard drive with some pretty good expensive programs installed.

However the owner says that the hard drive is locked up with an unknown password.

Is there a way to bypass the password? Because if I have to install an operating system, this would not be worth it for me.

Another question, if I clone the hard drive, will I also be cloning the password lock-up?

Hi

If the seller is the legal owner he will know the password

For ATA encrypted hard disk with password request from bios

In the ATA spec the only way to clear the password is to run a low level disk erase command.

You can't clone the disk with this type of encryption
Or run dban or read hard disk in any way

Alternative may be full disk encryption with software part of enterprise ultimate windows or otherwise.
you can clone these disks but it won't help break encryption.

Dban can erases hard disk ready for re use
