i own a hard drive ( Western Digital 500 GB ) that wont turn on when plug it ( i cant feel it spinning when holding it , neither i can hear any sound from it ) and the BIOS dont show it and neither Windows detect it , i decided to remove the Printed Circuit board to check it , and i found a composant detached from it and i can spot some burning spot on it

my Question is : if i replace that board with identical other one with the same PCB reference , would my hard drive work again ??

i found a one with the same PCB number on this link : http://fr.aliexpress.com/store/product/WD-HDD-PCB-logic-board-2060-701537-004-REV-A-for-3-5-SATA-hard-drive/809720_1859090339.html?isOrig=true#extend
shall i buy it ?

Hi

Depending on make and model you may succeed or fail

Some newer hard drives need contents of firmware on circuit board copied to new board

There are some specialists who can copy firmware from damaged board to a replacement board where required

There is on in Canada

I had a 750GB Seagate die on me about a year ago. It was an old drive so I wasn't surprised it finally gave up the ghost. That being said, I didn't have a very recent backup of the drive and wanted to get whatever I could off of it. Examining the PCB it looked like there was a very faint "dusting" around one of the chips, like it burned up. I could hear the drive spin up and not making any awful noises so I thought replacing the PCB would be worth a shot. After a quick search on the interwebs I found www.hdd-parts.com and I purchased a PCB from them. I said a little prayer to the computer gods and fired up the drive with the new board attached. It totally worked! I copied the entire drive to a new disk and put the old one in the closet. Whew!

What you need to do is REALLY make sure you're getting the correct PCB for that specific drive brand, size, model, part number, firmware and whatever else. Good luck to you and I hope this fixes it. Just have a new drive ready to copy off all the files the minute the drive shows up.
