Hard drive replacement and back up

Hi, so recently I got a new 1tb hard drive, my old one is 500gb and now I wana transfer my file to the 1tb one so what do i have to do? I have an external hard drive that I can back up to but I don't know if windows will boot with a back up drive. and I cant fit two hard drive because of my case is too compact. Do I need to install windows on the new hard drive first so I can use it? thanks for the help.

I know you said you cannot fit 2 hard drives, but can you connect 2 hard drives at once, just connect one hard drive out of the case and use this software:

To clone your 500GB drive onto the 1TB Drive, you will have to extend the partition in Disk Management to 1TB to get the full size, though.

oh i see but is there any other way to do it without connecting the new hard drive?

There is, but it's much more work. You could connect it to a network, and create an image and save it to a network drive. You also may be able to create disks with an image on it, but I would just attach the new drive and clone it directly.
