hi,
i have windows 7 O S on a 120 gb samung ssd, which when installed had plenty of spare space.some weeks ago i was talked into putting another user on the system this then left me with 4 gb spare on the drive.on realizing this i removed the user account which hadnt been used only to find space still being taken up on the drive.i would have thought 120 gb drive would be plenty for the os and drive software,i havnt added anything else.do i need to uninstall the user account in another way? or am i being unrealistic on the drive size?
would be interested in your thoughts, thanks

Check that the folder for the user has been removed from C:\Users. You could also empty your temp folder, quite a bit of files can collect there over time. Go to C:\Users\MyUsername\AppData\Local\Temp and select all files and folders and delete, some of the files will be in use and they won't get deleted but that is normal.

Also how much memory do you have installed? By default Windows has hibernation enabled which reserves as much space from the system disk as you have ram. Easiest way to turn off hibernate is to open administrative command prompt (windows key + x and select admin command prompt) and type in 'powercfg.exe /hibernate off' and press enter. You can turn it back on by the same method but replacing the 'off' with 'on'.

You could also run Disk Clean-up, just type in cleanmgr.exe in the run prompt (windows key + r) and press enter to start it. Pressing on Clean up system files also checks for protected system files that could be removed, this includes leftovers from windows update etc (warning! after cleaning windows update files any installed windows updates can't be uninstalled at all!).

On 120gb drive you just need to manage the space more carefully.

Go to control panel - system and security - system - system protection (from left) - advanced - user profiles - configure. From there you can see all the profiles and space used. Delete the ones you dont need. Be careful not to delete your profile.

A 120GB SSD (I use one) is plenty for the OS and applications.

You need to evaluate what else is on that drive.
WinDirStat
And following that, System Restore points, which live in System Volume information, and are not visible via the common space tools.
