Hard drive transfer

I will be buying parts to build my own PC soon and i was wondering if i could take the hard drive out of an HP computer and put i in my new one. On a side not, I read this thing on Yahoo! answers about this same topic and one of the answers was this insanely detailed and long thing about how the windows 7 copy on the hard drive in a pre-built PC is binded by a volume key in the factory and not the product key on the PC itself. I highly doubt this is true, but if it is, then it's worth a shot. Any help would be great.

You will need to purchase a new Windows disk for this computer as it is a new computer.

Your other option is to run with Linux for free.
