Hi Guys

I am looking to get a new computer but want to transfer my current hard drive / windows to the new computer. Will windows show as corrupt or will it be compatible with the new computer?

Thanks.

Solution

OK. An Upgraded Win 10 should be no problem for the licensing.

For the OS activation, read and do this before you change any parts:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/20530/windows-10-reactivating-after-hardware-change

For the actual OS operation, be prepared for a full wipe and reinstall of everything.
Your current OS *might* boot up in the new hardware, or it may fail massivel.y

Basically, 3 outcomes:
1. It boots up just fine
2. It fails completely
3. It boots up, but you're chasing issues for...
If you mean new CPU and new motherboard, then you will need to reinstall Windows. You can reuse the hard drive. But motherboards have things like chipset software which Windows needs to set up, and your old motherboard will undoubtedly be different than your new motherboard.

Won't your new computer come with Windows? Or are you going to build it yourself?

Thanks for your reply dontlistentome.

I was planning to build it myself (new motherboard, cpu, ram and gpu) but didn't want to have to buy a new hard drive and windows.

How would I go about reinstalling Windows on the new computer? Would I need to purchase Windows again? I don't have a physical copy of Windows.

Where did your current Win 10 license come from?

Hi USAFRet

It was included when purchased my current computer. It was originally Windows 8 but I got the free upgrade to Windows 10.

I've seen all 3.

Prepare for a full reinstall.

Thanks for your reply and info.

I will give this some thought.
It may be easier for me to purchase a New version of Windows.
