What is the deal with hard drive reliability these days. I work as an I.T. and I have a shelf packed FULL of crashed drives. Majority of these drives are less than a year old! Out of 36 Seagate Barracuda 500gb drive I bought less than a year ago, 9 of them are crashed!! And I have tons more crashed! All different manufactures, types and sizes. I recently just had a large size drive crash on my home computer. I had the data backed up on an external. Now being my only copy of the data, I needed to back it up again. While backing up my backup drive, it crashed!! Now most of the data is gone! WTH is going on with hard drives these days! Looks like I'm going to have to build a raid 10 data server to store ALL of my data now because of this. Do I just have very bad luck, or are you guys also noticing terrible hard drive reliability these days?

Solution
If more than one drive has crashed on the same system I would look for the root cause. Whether it be a PSU issue as suggested by anonymous1 or something else. Are there any similarities between the computers with crashed drives such as them being the same make and model? I only ask because the crashes are independent of drive manufacturer and drive size.
