I recently changed out the RAM in my system and am getting a bizarre error I've never encountered. It's not a blue screen, and there is no memory dump file that results; instead the video cuts out and one or more of my system's fans (definitely the primary exhaust fan, possibly others as well) spins up to max. This has happened twice now, with the first instance occurring while I was away and the second instance seemingly being triggered by me accidentally bumping the stand upon which the computer rests.
Windows reports the two instances of the problem as follows:
Additionally, Reliability Monitor reports a bunch of instances of the Desktop Windows Manager crashing, following the hardware error event. Here's a sample of one:
I have tried reseating the RAM and will wait to see if that potentially fixed the issue.
For what it's worth, the first time this happened, I pressed the power button on the case and, after a little while, the system shut down on its own. The second time, I tried just pressing and nothing seemed to happen (it's possible I didn't wait long enough), so I pressed and held the button down for a forced power-off. Reliability Monitor only reports a "Windows was not properly shut down" event after the second instance of this problem happening.
When the first error happened, my RAM was clocked at 3600 MT/s, which I was somewhat worried about because the 5600X is only rated to support 3200. But after the first error, I downclocked it to 3200, and the second instance of the error happened regardless.
For context, my system has a history of being very finnicky with RAM. I started with a Ryzen 3200G and a 4GBx2 memory kit (Patriot Viper 4 Blackout Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) PVB48G300C6K), with no problems whatsoever. Eventually I upgraded to an 8GBx2 kit (G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3600 (PC4 28800) F4-3600C18D-16GVK) with no problems either... until I upgraded my CPU to a Ryzen 5600X. Then I encountered numerous blue screens until, with assistance from this forum, I finally figured out that it was down to the memory and the new CPU, for whatever reason, not getting along. So I went back to the original 8GB kit and was using that for a year without problems.
Late last year I decided to try going to 16 GB again, and this time I got another Patriot memory kit (Patriot Memory Signature Premium DDR4 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz (PC4-25600) UDIMM Kit W/HEATSHIELD PSP416G3200KH1) because the previous one worked well in my system. And this one seemed to work fine without any stability issues, but I didn't realize until too late that it had high CAS latency, and I thought I was noticing stutters in games where I hadn't noticed them when on the original 8GB kit, so I went back to that, again. And a couple of months later, I decided to try again with a kit with much lower latency (Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3600 (PC4-28800) C16 1.35V - CMK16GX4M2D3600C16), and this is the memory kit that is currently in my PC.
If anyone has any insights into what might have caused this, any help would be appreciated.
