I've been done with my very first build as of Monday. Here are my specs:

MSI P6N SLI-FI
E6600 2.4 not OC'd
2gb Mushkin DDR2 PC2 6400 at 5-5-5-18 (initial setting)
EVGA 8800 GTS 320mb
Zalman 9500 CPU fan
2 x WD 300gb in IDE
and a samsung dvdw drive
Vista Ultimate 32bit

My issue...just started today while i was moving files from one drive to another pics and vids and stuff.
Random restart! Now it has been doing that for the last 4 hours and I can't seem to figure it out. I've been using it for 2 days now and no problems until today
My CPU temp is around 26c to 29c. I've run the vista memtest and no problems. i ran prime95 for only about 14 mins and things were fine.

Even when I enter the BIOS and look around for awhile it will restart on its own. It just restarted now but its not even booting up. No boot screen but the computer is running. HDD led is on but nothing is happening. I'm getting so frustrated. Please help. Any idea would be appreciated.

Why would I get random restarts now after 2 days?

Thanks in advance!

I would be speculating, but I would try one DIMM of RAM in slot 1 alone. If that didn't help, I would try the other single DIMM in slot one alone. Also, go into BIOS and up the voltage to your RAM to mfg. specs. At least bump the RAM voltage up a notch. You might be sure all connections to the MB are secure. Be sure the video card is secure. If you installed recent new video card drivers they could be causing the problem.

Also try turning off automatic restart wheich is occuring when your system restarts. Right click on My Computer>click on Advanced System settings>click Advanced Tab>click start up and recovery>uncheck automatically restart. Try and find out what is causing the system to crash this way.

First of all, try the One DIMM of RAM and increase the RAM voltage to mfg. specs.

I have an Ultra V series 600w PSU. After up the ram voltage to 2.0v... it was set at auto then 1.8v and 1.9v when I was having issues. Thing seem to be stable at 2.0v. If it happens again. i'll be back. thanks.

I did take everything apart and put it all back together and it started to do the same thing. I made sure all connections were secure and in the correct place.

Could it have been my ram? In the bios is was set at 5-5-5-18 and the voltage at 1.8v and 1.9v. but on the actual sticks it says 5-5-5-12. After upping to voltage to 2.0v and setting the timing to 5-5-5-12 there hasn't been an issue.

Question: if i up the sticks beyond what the mfg. says are 1.8v, will this pose an issue?

Thanks again for all your responses.

You'd need to tell us which Mushkin kit you have, but I would be surprised to learn Mushkin even offers PC6400 DIMMs that do not have EPPs programmed in with appropriate voltages; ie. 2.0V @ CL5, 2.1V @ CL4...

Check their website for your specific chip and what is covered. They probably include EVP with all PC6400 chips.
