Does it burn an actual OS CD that you can use to install XP without the
other software or does it burn an image of the hard drive as it shipped from
the factory with all the Dell installed software?

NO! It is only a recovery CD.

You CAN use it if you need to reinstall the OS for times when you need to
start over with the existing hard drive. The recovery CD uses info contained
in the hidden partition to reinstall the OS. If you get a new harddrive the
hidden partition does not exist which is why you need a full blown install
CD.

For the average home user, the image would be better.

Sorry you feel that way. I happen to like Dell computers and have used them
for about 10 years now. I am NOT trying to be a troll but you have your own
opinion and I doubt anything I say will change it.

Which system? I received a full set of CD's, including XP with SP2, with
my Dim 8400 (delivered 03-03-05).

Hm, sounds like a business opportunity for computer literate folks with

The only options on the website for choosing the OS 'with media' appear on
the Optiplex and Precision workstation models. This would suggest that
Dimensions are no longer shipping with media. ?

It's been over two months since I had a new Dimension in here, but it did
have the OS CD though not a Resource CD.

For those planning on buying some retail version of XP, be sure that the
disc comes with a key. Unlike the Dell badged OS discs, you'll be required
to enter the key on any retail disc install, or at least that's how it has
worked for me.

A Dimension delivered here yesterday (Friday) had the OS reinstallation CD -
Dell doesn't seem to have a definitive policy in place?

A combination of that and whatever OS CDs are left in the warehouse for
sure.

Just received a Dimension-- no CD, only a cardboard card telling me I wasn't
getting one. Ran the "make a system CD" utility once as allowed (the option
disappears from the menu after you run it.)

But just to be perverse (and directly disobeying the warning not to
duplicate it), I burned a few copies of the system CD I created.

I like to have a spare or two in case I need/can't find the original or it
was damaged/corrupted.....

So this is all Microsoft's fault huh? Where was this reported in the
press?

Or this just another Dell tactic to make millions more while sticking it to
their customers? Dell makes Dell policy! Microsoft does not dictate Dell
policy. Wake the hell up dummies!

Stop blaming Microsoft. Bill Gates is a good guy. He contributes billions
of dollars to good causes. Most people that say bad stuff about him are
just jealous losers.

While Dell might be to blame for a number of problems,
don't kid yourself. Microsoft has *everything* to say
about how their OS is distributed.

So how much time did this cost you?

Dell will make millions because only a few will call for these CDs while
many thousands more will not even know they got screwed until they need
them, and then it'll be too late. By then they won't even remember they
didn't receive them and blame themselves for misplacing them.

Hi Joe -

Got a burner you can use for an experiment? Scuttlebutt I read said that if
one adds a burner *after* buying the system, the option to create the CD
magically appears after 2- 3 reboots. ?

I'd sure be interested to know if this is true or urban legend, and the
machines I've had all had CDRWs so I couldn't verify.

RDT!

Maybe it's just a raffle or something ;-)

Not true anymore.

There's no difference in my experience.

Stew,

I'm probably going to put one in early next week. I'll do a boot-a-thon and
let you know what happens.

Maybe you're just not very experienced! <g>

Take a look at:

http://catalog.us.dell.com/CS1/cs1page2.aspx?br=6&c=us&cs=04&fm=11048&kc=6W463&l=en&s=bsd

Under "Operating System," you've got a choice of:

"Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional SP2 with media" or

"Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional SP2 without media"

For Dimension:
http://tinyurl.com/aom7y

Operating System
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional [add $79 or $2/month1] Dell
Recommended

Anyway, whatever happened to the arguments that not including the OS CD
was dictated by Microsoft, and that it's now industry "standard"?
