Has anyone used several photos to convert to 3D CAD?

Can we take photos of airplanes/cars museums cannot afford to buy for static displays. And make scale or full size replicas? I read where a canoe builder made new prototype shapes to test then needed to convert into a 3D data cloud to make new molds. But cannot find the article now.

I think 3d modelling needs 3d scanner. Well, at least a colleague of mine need a 3d scanner for the whale bones study and replica. Otherwise, a stereo photo is good for making a 3d print photo (cross eye, anaglyph, or lenticular).
